Bullhorn Armchair Intellectuals - 08-22-2008, 05:00 AM

Where have all the armchair intellectuals gone? Long time since a thread....where have all..

This is the question of the ages....or the question of the night....my night anyway...it is 12:45. Not that that has relevancy to this....but it does speak to my late night ramblings

So question...

Where have all the armchair intellectuals gone? Have we truely exhausted all conversation topics? No more trying to save the world? Figure out the world? Understand why men are from another world (hehe jk...you all know i love penis )? Are we put off, uninspired, lacking in motivation to engage with oneanother in intellectual cyber ramblings. No one gets you anyway. Are half the people that write, blocked so you really cannot follow a thread even if your intellectual abilities depended upon it? Or, maybe you are just here to play frozen.

Ok i am going to try a round of frozen, then it is bedtime.
Goodnight.

edited to include....ok maybe not frozen, i don't have enough posts. i refer you to the chitchat catagory for the discussion on posting if desired lol.

LOL. well it all depends on your definition of an armchair intellectual. For some it would be the ability to read, dissamble and process the information within the thread, do some research and comeback with an equally fitting retort. for some who are probably more like myself .. we survive on our life knowledge and experience or things weve picked up in learning or conversation from others. Not that we arent intellectual but that we debate very much in the sense of the man on the street. we dont take time to research we go with what we know and our gut instincts.

Then of course there are those that just like to ramble. very much like I'm doing now but then when its 5.17 am and you should be in bed sleeping and not sitting on the net looking at a screen full of text, you tend to ramble incoherent thoughts. or is that random thoughts but thats another thread in chit chat.

Anyway i think ive confused myself now cause i have no idea what the hell i was on about now so I think I'll bow out until i can regather my thoughts LOL

err well if you want the truth I am planning a marriage, and extremely hectic at work. So I am afraid that I just haven't had the time to post any really go stuff

Don't worry as soon as life returns to a little bit of normality then I will be back to teach you the correct ways of life

but I agree Betula It has gone a bit quite..

Of course when you say have we given up figuraging out the world. Well no no. I had that figured out years ago. ITs just for some strange reason no one else seems to agree with me!

But I remind self in my delusion that i'm of course right and the rest of you are wrong

hugss betula and cheers for posting some thing in this thread I been missing it ! XX

If you get too into intellectual philosophy without a break, you can become isolated and distanced from the totally mundane & ridiculous. Which is an actual requirement in our lives. Without it we would not appreciate the finer points of intelligence or debate.

I also only really comment on topics I have personal experience of or have already researched enough to hold my own in a serious discussion. I can always give my opinion on a topic, but if I feel ignorant on a subject then I tend to leave it at that..

A few famous quotes:

John F. Kennedy: "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country".

George W. Bush: "We're kicking ass".

Thomas Jefferson: "When a man assumes a public trust, he should consider himself a public property".

George W. Bush: "I am mindful not only of preserving executive powers for myself but for predecessors as well".

Abraham Lincoln: "I claim not to have controlled events but plainly confess that events have controlled me".

George W. Bush: "It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it".

The flames are all long gone but the pain lingers on.

Oh thanks all for your responses.
I have been busy also, and well of course one has to be first interested in the topic, and second have something to say. I have to agree with BS in what he thinks an armchair intellectual is. It is someone just sitting in their chair, contributing to the discussion from the pool of their own knowledge. This can include opinion, facts and personal experiences...stories. I personally think that if we are having to go off and research something to make our own opinion, or be accepting of someone else's then this have moved beyond armchair intellectuals into academia.

If someone wants or feels a need to spend their time that way fine, but i don't think we all should have too. I spend enough of my time quoting other peoples opinons just to justify my own in university. I shouldn't have to do it here. Quite frankly i think it is intimidating to people that want to contribute but feel inadequate to do so for whatever reason.

And omg pleeeeeeasseeee no more Bush!!!....well in this thread anyway.

well I remember conducting my literature review to show a gap in knowledge - that is not a fun activity but an essential part of the process. Doing research as an armchair intellectual is surely just an admission of a gap in personal knowledge and driven by a need for further evidence....

it may be an essential part of the process, but you have to be willing to accept a gap in your knowledge base, or within the topic to engage in the process of researching. but within this venue, should it be considered a necessary step in contributing to armchair intellectuals?

you can find anyone saying anything to back up whatever you want to say. there is history, theories, science for either side of any fence. if one is far more articulate in presenting their opinion surrounded by what is touted as 'fact'....this has a tendency to silence other voices. voices that are not surrounded in so called 'fact' from whatever source, are not heard in the same way. so research is useful i agree, essential even....but is it neccessary in armchair intellectuals?
